Juneteenth & ABHM Field Trip

May 27, 2022

During the month of June we also celebrate Juneteenth on June 19th, which commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. In 2020, Dane County passed a resolution to officially Juneteenth as a paid holiday for county employees. Did you know that Milwaukee, WI has the longest running and the largest Juneteenth celebration? Milwaukee will be partnering with the Northcott Neighborhood House to host the 51st annual Juneteenth Jubilee Parade and Celebration. The parade will take place on Sunday, June 19th along Dr. Martin Luther King Drive in Milwaukee from 9-11 AM with the celebration to follow. Dane County will also be celebrating Juneteenth on Saturday, June 18th with a parade at 11:00 and then a celebration at 12:00. This will all take place at Penn Park.

Orion employees visited America’s Black Holocaust museum (ABHM) in Milwaukee, WI last month as part of the first official DEI sponsored field trip. It was a very educational and informative event for all that attended. We had a group that attended on Friday, a group that attended on Sunday and some that completed the virtual tour. Additional stops included a trip to the Bronzeville Collective, which features handmade goods and art of over 25 black, brown, queer and ally creatives. All that attended had very insightful thoughts and feelings that were shared during and after the IDEAB meeting.
